Forest Garden
A large forest home with framed views across paddocks. With the house situated in the middle of its plot, the garden had unutilised areas and needed a refresh and better solutions to the changes of level between the house, pool, lawns and terraces. The access drive was a large expanse of brick and adjacent brick retaining wall that needed to be softened. The client wanted a more country feel rather than the suburban styling of the existing entrance drive.
The design takes into account the irregular boundaries, some tall and shading, and invites users on a journey around all corners of the garden to the newly programmed areas. Adjacent buildings are accommodated to better relate to the main garden. An overgrown hedge is lowered to borrow a longer view past the garden boundary and expand the existing view. Terrace steps are adjusted to make the routes between adjoining spaces unconsciously flow better.

On larger projects I sometimes make an assessment of the existing situation to understand what is involved and required.
If a site is complex I back up the site assessment with a concept sketch to outline ideas, use and ambitions.
